Antarctica: Supersaline Pond Never Freezes

Don Juan Pond, Antarctica is the saltiest body of water on Earth. It has a salinity that is 18 times that of the ocean – and it never freezes in Antarctica’s brutal cold winters. Researchers believe that it is a potential model for liquid water on other planets.

White-Nose Syndrome Spreading through Bat Communities

“White-nose syndrome” is a disease first noted in the bats of some New York caves in February 2007. It has since spread to bat populations in many parts of the United States. USGS has a website that reports how the disease is spreading.

Gulf of Mexico Oil Rig Leaking 5000 Barrels/Day

A new estimate of leakage volume from the sunken oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico is 5000 barrels per day. It is threatening the coastlines of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida.

Controlled Burn Considered for Gulf Oil Spill

Since efforts to plug the oil spill caused by the explosion of an oil platform in the Gulf or Mexico have failed, the Coast Guard is now considering a controlled burn. About 42,000 gallons of oil are spilling into the water daily threatening coast lines and fishing industries.

Acasta River Gneiss for Sale?

40,000 Year-Old Asphalt Volcanoes Found Off California

Ocean researchers found a large number of asphalt “volcanoes” on the floor of the Santa Barbara Channel off the coast of California. They are thought to have formed from oil seeps between 30,000 and 40,000 years ago.
