Shell Finds Shale Gas in China

Shell and PetroChina drilled two vertical wells to test the natural gas potential of shales in the Sichuan Basin. China is thought to have the largest recoverable shale gas resource in the world but it remains untested.

Alaska Natural Gas to Asian Markets?

Alaska has an abundance of natural gas and there is a proposal in the state legislature for building a pipeline to the southcentral Alaska port where the gas would be condensed and shipped to Asian markets as LNG .

Flooding Forces Bangkok Evacuations

The Chao Phraya River is flooding and portions of Bangkok have below-sea-level elevations. Evacuation orders have been issued for residents of the Don Muang and Bang Phlat districts and thousands of people are now leaving the city.

Magnitude 7.2 Earthquake in Turkey

USGS reports that a magnitude 7.2 earthquake occurred in eastern Turkey at 1:41 PM local time. CNN reports that several buildings have collapsed in Van Province.

Flooding in Southern Pakistan

“Unusually heavy monsoon rains inundated southern Pakistan in the summer of 2011, submerging fields and forcing residents from their homes. On September 29, 2011, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported that 5.44 million people had been affected, 1.8 million residents had been displaced, and 2.1 million acres of cropland had been damaged.” Quoted from the NASA image release.
