Progress on Emissions and Acid Rain

“Since the establishment of the Acid Rain Program, of the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments, there have been substantial reductions in sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides emissions from power plants that use fossil fuels, which are known to be the primary causes of acid rain. As of 2009, emissions of SO2 and NOx declined by about two-thirds relative to levels in the 1990s.” Quoted from the USGS press release.

Video: What is the Morganza Spillway?

This U.S. Army Corps of Engineers video describes the Morganza Spillway and Morganza Floodway. The Morganza Spillway was recently opened to reduce pressure on the Mississippi River levees that protect the cities of New Orleans and Baton Rouge. Thousands of people live in areas that could be flooded if the Morganza Floodway is utilized to its fullest extent. “Every year, written notices are issued to all interests reminding them of the possibility of operation of the floodway. In the event that Morganza needs to be opened, the USACE project managers, along with news media and civil officials, will help notify all interested parties as soon as possible.

Radionuclides in Montana Ground Water

A study of ground water in southwest Montana, United States Geological Survey researchers found levels of radionuclides that exceed EPA’s safety standards in 29% of wells sampled. In response a county sanitarian found that installing reverse osmosis systems in well- water homes reduced the radionuclide levels.

Immediately after the Deepwater Horizon well accident in the Gulf of Mexico, oil drifting from the site usually headed west and northwest to the Mississippi River Delta. Now currents are drawing some of the oil southeast.
