An interesting article on the Insurance Journal reports that about 1% of Oklahoma homeowners have earthquake insurance coverage. A recent increase in the number of small earthquakes in the state may motivate more homeowners to seek insurance.

Field School Recruits Enthusiastic Workers to an Archaeology Project

The University of North Florida ’s anthropology department is working a dig on Black Hammock Island. They are taking advantage of the general public’s enormous interest in archaeology by offering a field school that brings enthusiastic workers to their project. Another project at the Colonial Pemaquid State Historic Site in Maine needs a large number of volunteers for a dig.

Corals as Climate Recorders

The U.S. Geological Survey Coral Reef Ecosystem Studies Project is analyzing corals from various sites in the Caribbean region, Dry Tortugas National Park, Biscayne National Park, other areas of the Florida Keys, and the Virgin Islands. The objective of this project is to develop records of past environmental change to better our understanding of climate variability. The records are being used to document changes over the last few centuries and to determine how corals and coral reefs have responded to any changes.

Polar Bear Swims 426 Miles in Nine Days

A polar bear wearing a GPS collar and other sensors survived a 426-mile swim across the Beaufort Sea. The bear swam continuously for nine days and lost 100 pounds.
