USGS has released .pdf files of the “ Seismic-Hazard Maps for the Conterminous United States , 2008″. “These maps are intended to summarize the available quantitative information about seismic ground motion hazard for the conterminous United States from geologic and geophysical source.” Quote from the USGS publication release.

Igneous Rocks from Space?

Concave Facets?

Gemstones have been faceted for hundreds of years and up until about 20 years ago the facets have been perfectly flat surfaces. New equipment allows facets to be cut with a concave shape that gathers light from a wider range of angles and broadly diverges it within the stone. The result is a bright and interesting gem. The down side is that the weight of the stone is reduced.

Earth Science Week Contests for 2011

The American Geological Institute is sponsoring three national contests as part of Earth Science Week 2011, celebrating the theme of “Our Ever-Changing Earth,” October 9-15. Students in K-5 have a two-dimensional art contest, students in 6-9 an essay contest, and a photography contest for the general public.

Field School Recruits Enthusiastic Workers to an Archaeology Project

The University of North Florida ’s anthropology department is working a dig on Black Hammock Island. They are taking advantage of the general public’s enormous interest in archaeology by offering a field school that brings enthusiastic workers to their project. Another project at the Colonial Pemaquid State Historic Site in Maine needs a large number of volunteers for a dig.
