Over 800 geological reports, maps and other documents are available from the Arizona Geological Survey’s document repository. That includes nearly all of their: open-file reports, digital geologic maps, contributed maps, contributed reports, miscellaneous maps and more. You can search for documents by topic keyword, location keyword, author, collection, publication date and more. Every geological survey should have an online document repository.

State Geological Survey Staffing and Budgets

The Arizona Geology blog shares some informative graphs of budget and staffing levels at State Geological Surveys. Staff levels have dropped by about 25% since their peak in the mid-1980′s – this happening during a time when information about mineral resources and geological hazards is in increasing demand.

Fault Activity Map of California

“The map shows the locations of known faults that can be portrayed at 1:750,000 scale and indicates the latest age when displacements took place, according to available data. A publication of the Arizona Geological Survey just received a nice write-up in the Tucson Citizen. Their “ Homebuyer’s Guide to Geologic Hazards in Arizona ” (PDF docuemnt – might take a while but worth the wait) has a lot of valuable information that can save real estate buyers a lot of headaches. Every state should develop a booklet like this and make it available for free on the web!

300 Free Arizona Geology Publications

The Arizona Geological Survey now has over 300 publications online for free downloading. What a fantastic service! Lots of surveys are still charging for their reports that reach very few people – when they could distribute them for free and reach an enormous number of people.

The Kansas Geological Survey has published “The Permian System in Kansas“. This is a report of about 88 pages with lots of great stratigraphic illustrations, outcrop photos, maps, and references. Takes a little time to download but worth the wait. I really enjoy seeing state geological surveys putting nice publications online for free distribution
